DNA Testing for Twins

dadcheck®gold is able to provide DNA testing services to determine whether two people are related as:

  • Fraternal twins / non-identical twins (dizygotic)
  • Identical Twins (monozygotic)

Fraternal twins are conceived when two eggs (ova) are fertilised by two sperm to produce two individuals with different DNA profiles. These two individuals will share the same genetic relationship as siblings born at different times. Therefore, statistical calculations should indicate a full sibling relationship. Ideally, the mother, father or both parents should participate in this test to improve the result.

In identical twinning, an egg (ovum) is fertilised by a single sperm. The fertilised egg then splits and two embryos develop independently. These two individuals will have identical copies of DNA. For identical twins and using short tandem repeat (STR) DNA technology, we would expect the DNA profiles to be identical and match at every marker tested.
