Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity DNA Testing

For Local Authority and legal profession clients our Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Testing (NIPPT) service using DNA technology is now available.

What are the benefits?

  • Establishing paternity before birth can help resolve custody, visitation and child maintenance arrangements
  • Helps to inform decision making about safeguarding and well being of the child
  • Gives clear paternity evidence for any court or mediation proceedings
  • Enhances co-operation between the parties.

How Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Testing works

  • This is a reliable and non-invasive method to determine paternity around 10 weeks into the pregnancy.
  • The mum provides a small blood sample which contains cells containing both her DNA and DNA from the unborn child. This is called cell free foetal DNA and circulates in the mum’s bloodstream, increasing in amount as the baby grows.
  • Generally, at 10 weeks there is enough foetal DNA for us to isolate this DNA and perform a paternity test. We therefore require samples from post 10 weeks (with the date based upon a scan).
  • The alleged father provides a cheek swab, as he would do for a standard paternity test.
  • Blood samples will be taken by one or our appointed phlebotomists and we will arrange a suitable time and venue.
